An Introverted Writer

My Writing Life

Boris has announced a social lock down. Now if I was an extrovert I’d be miffed. How dare the government get involved in my social life and stop me mixing and mingling. Thankfully I’m an introvert and the thought of spending the next three weeks (with the possibility of more) in solitary confinement with nothing be a laptop for warmth and company is … well … my idea of bliss.

Quote about introversion

Ever since I decided to get serious about finishing the first draft of my memoir, it’s been noisy in my head. I’ve had so many ideas swimming around in there. Not just about the stories I want to write, but how to write them.

I’ve been reading memoirs, read books about writing memoirs, listening to memoir books on Audible, and devouring blog posts about the art of memoir. By the end of it I’ll be able to write a book about How to Write a Memoir … but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.

Where I’ve been running into trouble with my memoir is the story has become too big. It’s too broad, and I’ve finally realized that it’s actually three memoirs in one. So before I’ve even got a rough draft written of my first one, I’m already clouding my future with the other two. But it makes sense to write them, because I love reading memoirs.

I used to read crime dramas and police detective novels. I’d devour them. But as I’ve got older, I’m more interested about the stories people tell about themselves.

Memoirs are a type of mystery. A person, the main protagonist in the memoir, is on a journey and they’re a different person by the end of the book, than they were at the beginning. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and being able to convey that change in a memoir, and affecting another person’s life with your story, is a gift.

I’m hoping I have the gift of the gab… and can deliver a compelling memoir that you’ll want to read.

Next Steps

So what are the next steps for my memoir? Making sure I’m clear about my area of expertise, and the topic I’m writing just focuses on one.
